Chasity Brown + Band at Mears Park. 6pm. June 18th. FREE.

“When I say it’s great to welcome you to the 2009 Twin Cities Jazz Festival, the words probably have more weight than at any other time in our 11-year history. The celebration of this great American art form – jazz – in downtown Saint Paul nearly didn’t happen this year. Yes, that’s right, I’m talking about “The Economy.” Support for arts organizations (and events like the Twin Cities Jazz Festival) is hard to come by these days, and for a time it looked like we would have to take a year off due to lack of funding.

What happened instead was that a community of people who believe in the Twin Cities Jazz Festival came together and said “the show must go on.” And what a show it is. New Orleans R&B legend Allen Toussaint will grace the Mears Park stage for a free concert on Friday, June 19 (preceded by Saint Paul’s own legend Irv Williams). Esperanza Spalding, a singer and bassist who is one of the most exciting young jazz artists on the world stage, appears on Saturday, June 20 on a bill that also includes Twin Cities modernists The New Standards. With the return of Jazz Night Out in downtown Saint Paul on Thursday, June 18, club shows to take you into the wee hours and much more, the once-in-limbo Twin Cities Jazz Festival promises to be one of the most powerful to date.”
